11 березня 1938 року під загрозою військового вторгнення Німеччина пред’явила австрійському президентові Мікласу ультиматум: призначити людину рейху канцлером або німецькі війська увійдуть до Австрії. Так главою тимчасового уряду Австрії став Зейс-Інкварт. Цей крок тільки прискорив розвиток подій. На прохання Зейс-Інкварта 12 березня німецькі війська на чолі з Гітлером ввійшли до австрійського Лінце, а 13 березня 1938 р. було підписано документ про повний аншлюс Австрії, яка стала провінцією Третього рейху.
